What Athletic Level Do You Need for a U.S. Sports Scholarship?

With thousands of universities across the United States offering sports scholarships, there’s a pathway for athletes at many different levels. However, competition and requirements vary depending on the division, school, and sport.

Scholarship Pathways by U.S. University Division

NCAA Division I

Recruit elite athletes with national or international competition experience. These athletes often have strong athletic rankings or performance metrics, and are expected to meet academic requirements like the SAT and TOEFL.

NCAA Division II

Still offer high-quality athletic and academic experiences but may be slightly more flexible. Coaches look for solid national-level athletes with competitive stats and academic test scores.

NCAA Division III

Focus primarily on academics and do not offer athletic scholarships. However, they often provide generous academic or need-based aid. These schools welcome a wide range of athletes who are also strong students.

Junior Colleges (JUCO)

Provide two-year programs that allow athletes to develop their performance and academics before transferring to a four-year university. Entry standards and athletic levels vary, making it a great stepping stone for many.

At KARA Education, we evaluate each student-athlete individually to ensure they meet the academic and athletic standards required to pursue a scholarship in the United States. Here’s what’s generally expected:

Academic Criteria

Be at least 16 years old
Maintain strong academic performance, particularly in core subjects like English, Maths, and a social science
Avoid extended gaps in education before enrolling in a U.S. college
Meet minimum standardized test scores, such as the SAT (usually starting around 860 for reading and math combined)

Athletic Criteria

Stay consistently involved in training and competition
Demonstrate a competitive level in your sport
Maintain amateur status—meaning you haven’t signed a professional contract or accepted prize or sponsorship money
Show dedication, coachability, and a strong work ethic—qualities U.S. college coaches value as much as skill
